Understanding the Role of Non-Reinforced Water Activated Tape in Light Packaging

March 30, 2026

In the spectrum of water activated tapes, the JLN-370 occupies the light duty segment. Unlike reinforced grades that incorporate fiberglass or plant-based yarns for tensile strength, this model relies solely on the integrity of the kraft paper backing and the penetration of the starch-based adhesive. The structure is simpler, with a total weight of 90 g/m2 and a thickness of 0.12 mm. This lack of reinforcement makes the tape easier to tear by hand and fully repulpable, which is a critical factor for facilities aiming for 100% recyclable packaging streams. The adhesive system activates with water, bonding chemically with the carton fibers rather than sticking to the surface like plastic tapes. This creates a tamper-evident seal, as removing the tape damages the cardboard surface. While it does not offer the burst strength required for heavy industrial shipping or pallet stabilization, the JLN-370 is effective for retail boxes, lightweight e-commerce parcels, and internal transfers where box integrity is already sufficient. It serves as a direct plastic-free alternative for operations that prioritize sustainability over extreme load-bearing capacity. From a manufacturing perspective, selecting non-reinforced tape reduces material costs while maintaining the eco-friendly profile associated with kraft paper sealing solutions.
